The Ultimate NDIS Eligibility Checklist | iCare

Are you wondering if you or a loved one might qualify for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

To help you determine if the NDIS is the right fit, we've put together an eligibility checklist. This guide will walk you through the essential criteria and steps needed to apply.

Age Requirements

Are you between 9 and 65 years old?

  • If yes, continue with the checklist.
  • If you have a child under 9, an early childhood partner can provide support before you apply.
  • If you’re over 65, you may not be eligible for the NDIS, but other support options might be available.

Residency Requirements

Are you an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a Protected Special Category Visa holder?

  • If yes, proceed to the next question.
  • If no, you may need to explore other support options. The NDIS is available only to Australian citizens, permanent visa holders, and Protected Special Category Visa holders.

Do you live in Australia?

  • If yes, you meet the residency requirement.
  • If no, the NDIS is only available to those residing in Australia.

Disability Requirements

  • Do you have a disability caused by a permanent impairment?some text
    • If yes, continue with the checklist. The impairment could be intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, physical, or psychosocial.
    • If no, the NDIS may not be suitable for you, but other supports could be available.
  • Do you usually need disability-specific supports to complete daily activities?some text
    • If yes, you might be eligible for the NDIS. Find out how to apply.
    • If no, the NDIS may not be the best fit, but other supports might still be helpful.

Early Intervention Requirements

  • Do you need some supports now to reduce your future need for assistance?some text
    • If yes, you might qualify for the NDIS. Learn how to apply.
    • If no, consider other support options, as the NDIS might not be the most suitable.
  • Do you need support for your family to build their skills to help you?some text
    • If yes, you may be eligible. Find out how to apply.
    • If no, a local area coordinator can help you connect with other community supports.

Ready to Apply?

If you meet the eligibility criteria and need funded supports from the NDIS, it's time to apply. If you're eligible, you’ll become an NDIS participant, and we’ll assist you in developing a plan based on your goals and support needs. Your plan will include funding for supports that will help you achieve your goals.

How to Apply

  • Contact iCare:
We’re here to help you understand the eligibility requirements and guide you through the application process.
  • Contact the NDIS Directly:
You can also reach out to the NDIS directly at 1800 800 110. They’ll connect you with a local area coordinator or discuss other options.

Information to Support Your Application

To determine your eligibility, the NDIS requires specific information and evidence about your disability and its impact on your daily life.

  • Evidence of Age and Residency:
The easiest way to provide this is by giving consent for the NDIS to check your Centrelink record. Alternatively, you can submit official documents like your birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, or proof of age card for age verification, and your Australian birth certificate, citizenship certificate, or passport with a valid visa for residency verification.
  • Evidence of Disability and Functional Capacity:
The NDIS needs evidence of your disability and its impact on daily life. This can include assessments, reports, and written statements from your treating health professional.

For more detailed information, check out the types of disability evidence required on the NDIS website.

What Happens After You Apply?

Once you submit your application, the NDIS will decide if you're eligible or request more information within 21 days. You'll be notified of the decision, how it was made, and the next steps.

  • If You’re Eligible:
You’ll become an NDIS participant, and we’ll set up a meeting to discuss your goals and support needs, followed by creating your NDIS plan.
  • If You’re Not Eligible:
We’ll explain why and inform you of your review rights. Even if you’re not eligible for the NDIS, we can still help you connect with other community supports. If your circumstances change, you can reapply in the future.
