What is an NDIS support coordinator and what do they do?
In this article, we'll explain what a support coordinator does, how to become one, and what makes a good one. Whether you're thinking about becoming a support coordinator or wondering if you can get funding for one, this guide is for you.
What is Support Coordination?
According to the NDIS, support coordination is designed to help you make the best use of your supports in your NDIS plan. It is a capacity-building support designed to:
- Understand and use your NDIS plan to pursue your goals
- Connect you with NDIS providers, community, mainstream, and other government services
- Build your confidence and skills to use and coordinate your supports
A support coordinator or specialist support coordinator delivers these services.
The 3 levels of support coordination
There are three levels of support coordination that can be included in your plan:
- Support Connection – This support helps build your ability to connect with informal, community, and funded supports.
- Support Coordination (Coordination of Supports) – This support assists you in building the skills needed to understand and use your plan. A support coordinator works with you to ensure a mix of supports is used to increase your capacity to maintain relationships, manage service delivery tasks, live more independently, and be included in your community.
- Specialist Support Coordination – This higher level of support coordination is for individuals whose situations are more complex and who need specialist support. A Specialist Support Coordinator helps manage challenges in your support environment and ensures consistent delivery of services.

- Connecting with Providers – Assist in connecting you with suitable NDIS providers, community services, and other supports.
- Building Capacity – Work with you to develop the skills and confidence needed to manage your own supports in the long term.
- Problem Solving – If issues arise, support coordinators help troubleshoot and resolve these challenges, ensuring your supports are delivered effectively.
